There is a lot of misinformation about Trich. Many who suffer from this disorder, do so in silence due to the shame and embarrassment one feels about being exposed and having to deal with people’s reactions.

Many hair pullers are not even aware they are doing it until it’s too late. They may zone out when they are bored twirl their hair may pull here or there on their hair as a self-soothing behavior. Other sufferers are aware of their behavior and purposely do it to release stress or other emotions. The urge is irresistible and becomes addictive and compulsive.

Most people pull out their hair do this one main area example on their head or say eyebrows but some suffers can mix and do several locations as above.

Often starting in childhood or teen years or later in adult life…. most people affected are women and more and more men also do this and experience the disorder, and compulsion.

Hair pulling is usually, but not always, followed by a sensation of relief or pleasure.  A Trichotillomania episode may be triggered by a negative response mood state or occur in response to stress, but may also occur while an individual is calm and relaxed.

Sometimes hair pulling is done as a conscious behavior, but it is frequently done as an unconscious habit.

This pulling out hair  is a conditioned response to specific situations and events, and that the individual with Trichotillomania is frequently unaware of these triggers.

Why Do People Pull out Their Hair?

Trichotillomania is a Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior, along with DERMATILLOMANIA (skin picking) and nail biting. These disorders can affect people of all ages.

With the extensive research Craig has done over the years and  interviewing and working with individuals men and women deeply struggling with severe trichotillomania about their experience and beliefs,….the people candidly speaking about pulling out their hair, In a nutshell – all points to and  highlights to this;   they  feel  simply compelled to, in order to feel pleasure, gratification or relief as a coping mechanism for stress,  anxiety and emotions, and deal with from psychological pain that occurs when the individuals pulls.

A variety of internal discomforts are often associated with compulsive hair pulling. These discomforts may trigger an individual episode of hair pulling. This includes emotional states, such as anxiety, tension, anger, boredom, and frustration. It includes physical sensations, such as muscular tension and vague feelings of “not feeling right”. It can for some people may also include thoughts that identify a “defective” hair which needs to be plucked, because it seems too long, too light or dark, and so on.

Why Do People Pull Their Hair for many years on and off and hard to stop?

Hair pulling in and of itself  is often triggered by one or more of the internal discomforts described above. The hair pulling usually has the effect of (the illusion!)  reducing the discomfort, or replacing it with comfort.

Some people report a sense of pleasure may accompany the hair pulling they like the texture in their hand and sound somewhat as they pull it out and literally acts  as a kind of short term fix a nice feeling or a comfort and distraction of feelings and emotions feeling perhaps under pressure stress and so forth and Craig noticed this act of pulling out hair can often be  a ‘way to get the persons unconscious beyond their awareness unmet needs met.’

Clients typically  say;
“…..the urges we get are like voices telling us to do it. Our hands and fingers seem to have a mind of their own and we finally feel relief once a hair is pulled…”
“….where when I’m stressed I can’t stop picking at my eyebrows and get small bald spots on them…”

However, some hair pulling seems to occur in the absence of any internal discomforts, when a person isn’t particularly paying any conscious attention to their hair or their hands.

Is this OCD?
Trichotillomania at times resembles Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in the feelings of compulsion and repetitive behavior, but the two disorders have different symptoms and require different treatments

Where People do the Pulling;
People usually pull hairs in relatively private places where they won’t be observed so are some how able to stop in actual public view, and are less likely to pull it in the presence of others. It’s usually done in relatively sedentary activities, such as watching television and working on their pc, driving the car, having a shower etc. Stars of perhaps playing, twirling and little tugs pulling out odd hairs here and there over time that leads to baldness and some people extreme hair loss…

Naturally and as explained on the first tab This leads to great shame, distress and embarrassment and often depression and then the cycle starts all over and this uncontrollable  need / Compulsion of pulling hair or  those individuals picking their skin for imperfections as far they perceive….

 Hair pulling is a conditioned response to specific situations and events, and that the individual with Trichotillomania is frequently unaware of these triggers. 

*Many skin pickers are perfectionists and find it hard to accept flaws of any sort in themselves or others. When you develop tools to recognize and tolerate imperfections, you can dramatically  lessen the internal pressure to be perfect.
